Maayi Director Surya Prakash Dies Of Heart Attack At 56, R Sarath Kumar Extends Condolences
With everything phenomenal going around, we come bearing some sad news. Tamil filmmaker Surya Prakash passed away after suffering a brutal cardiac arrest on Monday, May 27. He was 56. Surya was known for his popular films like Maayi and Diwan.
The news was conveyed to his fans and followers by actor-turned-politician R. Sarath Kumar. He revealed that he had spoken to Surya Prakash yesterday and that everything was perfectly normal.
Mourning his sudden demise, Kumar took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote, "My deepest condolences to his family and friends who are grieving his loss. I pray to God to rest his soul in peace.”
Maayi remains one of his few superhit films, which was headlined by Raj Kiran and Vanitha Vijayakumar. He made his directorial debut with the 1996 release, Manikkam.
Maayi was a stellar success, so much so that it even saw a remake in Telugu and Kannada. The popular Kannada film Narsimha happens to be its remake.
Surya Prakash, however, failed to create the same successful film as R. Sarath Kumar`s Diwan. He later directed Adhibar in 2015, which was yet again a commercial disappointment. The movie starred actor Jeevan in the leading role, who, according to fans, failed to do justice to his character.
The moviegoers were also of the opinion that Adhibar`s storyline and plot were not enticing enough to keep the viewers hooked till the very end. However, Jeevan appreciated the film`s script and revealed why he chose the Surya Prakash directorial as his comeback film.
In an old interview, the actor said, “The script of this film is what got me hooked on this project. The story of this film is of the kind that I haven’t done in my career before, and that is why I am excited about this project.”
On the work front, the late director had also started working on a romantic film set against a rural backdrop. He had named his upcoming movie Varusanaadu. However, the project never saw the light of day and remains unreleased to date.
Prakash was rather sure that if Varusanaadu was released, it would turn out to be a massive blockbuster. The cast, storyline, plot, budget, and other details were kept under wraps.
