Malayalam cinema has a new king! Director Prithviraj Sukumaran`s L2 Empuraan, starring the legendary Mohanlal, stormed into theatres on March 27th and has been rewriting record books ever since. The film marks a significant moment, showcasing the industry`s growing commercial power on a global stage.
The makers soon confirmed an even bigger milestone. On social media, they proudly announced, “Malayalam cinema breaches the 250 cr barrier for the first time in its history! The Emperor and his General navigating never seen before territory!” Star Mohanlal, who reprises his role as Stephen Nedumpally, added, “Empuraan now reigns as the highest-grossing film in Malayalam cinema history. The new industry benchmark. This moment belongs not just to us but to every heartbeat that echoed in theatres, to every cheer, every tear, to you. Running successfully in theatres near you.”
A significant portion of this success comes from overseas markets, highlighting the film`s international appeal. The 135 crore collected abroad in its first nine days helped push its total past the lifetime earnings of Yash`s 2018 Kannada hit, KGF Chapter 1 (238 crore).

However, the journey hasn`t been without bumps. The film faced controversies requiring edits due to scenes some found offensive. Furthermore, financial investigations involving the Enforcement Directorate and income tax notices to key figures like director Prithviraj and producer Antony Perumbavoor added off-screen complexities.
Despite these challenges, L2 Empuraan, which follows Stephen Nedumpally`s return to tackle new threats, continues its successful theatrical run, solidifying its place in Malayalam cinema history.
