The Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi was taken into police custody on Thursday for human trafficking. Patiala Court upheld a two-year jail term for the pop singer in the case and will be released after probation.
He was taken to Rajendra Hospital in Patiala for his medicals before being sent to Patiala jail. This is the same place of detention where cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu and Akali leader Bikram Majithia are lodged.
Sardar Patiala police station had lodged a complaint against Mehndi for taking huge amounts from people, promising them help in migrating to another country illegally. The case was registered against the singer, his brother Shamsher Singh, Dhian Singh, and Bulbul Mehta following a complaint by Bakshish Singh, a resident of Balbera village in Sanaur. The complaint read Daler had taken 12 Lakhs from him in a promise of sending him to Canada. However, neither was the resident sent to Canada nor was his money returned.
Seeing this, over 30 more complaints of a similar nature were registered against the three brothers. In March 2018, Daler was convicted by Patiala judicial magistrate Nidhi Saini, and his colleague Mehta was acquitted due to lack of evidence. However, Shamsher and Dhian died during the trial.
“Finally, justice has been delivered. There were 31 complaints in the case and the total amount cheated summed up to Rs. 1.93 crores, including 13 Lakhs paid by Singh,” said Gurpreet Singh Bhasin, the counsel of the complainants. Daler’s arrest was quite a controversial one as he was asked to strip naked by some junior police officers during an interrogation. He spent a few days behind the bars before getting bail.
The singer was recently seen on his younger brother Mika Singh’s Swayamvar show named Mika Di Vohti. Will Mika Singh continue the show without his elder brother?
