Six-piece band Daira is an Alternative progressive rock band to look out for from Mumbai. The band started when 6 friends Piyush Kapoor Lead Vocals, Chaitanya Bhaidkar Lead Guitars/Vocals, Vikalp Sharma Guitars/Vocals, Govind Gawli Bass, Johaan John Thekkan Keys/Vocals and Pratik Kulgod Drums started jamming together. Daira is all about love, freedom and nothingness! With art and music, the band endeavors to spread love and positive vibes across the globe.
We caught up with up and coming talented musicians to find out how their debut album is going, who inspires them, and their views on the independent scene.
Q. How did the sound of Daira come about, how will you define the music that you compose?
Well, it just happened when 6 people met with a few analog pedals, drums, guitars and a keyboard; and jammed. Since all the band members come from different backgrounds and have had different influences, there is a unique blend of musical fervor that comes out when the entire band writes songs.
Q. Was it difficult to find like-minded musicians to put together a team like yours?
It was quite difficult. It involved meeting a lot of people, collaborating with a few artists but we are glad that Daira found us eventually.
Q. How did you come up with the name &39;Daira&39;?
Initially when we sat down to decide a name for the band, there was a long discussion over WhatsApp because the members were in different geographical locations. Our guitarist &39;Chaitanya&39; had opened band name generator and was shooting random intimidating names. It was when our vocalist Piyush suggested this name &39;Daira&39; that brought everyone to a consensus.
Q. Lyrically, where do you draw influences from?
Some of the lyrical influences have been Jagjit Singh, Rage against the machine and Ali Azmat from the Pakistani legendary band Junoon.
Q. “A musician&39;s life isn&39;t easy”, do you agree?
It&39;s true. There is a lot of struggle. You need to invest a lot of time and money, travel, and find yourself events to play at. There is no provident fund for musicians, no security and most importantly, it is difficult to make others sometimes even parents understand what you are doing in life.
