I think Sonam should sweep all the awards, this year: Harshvardhan Kapoor

- Team RadioCity

Very rare are the occasions that you come across two newbies from different walks of life, who are brimming with talent and intellect, in equal measure. But that's Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher for you. Team Radio City was fortunate to catch up with the brightest new sparks who are about to create a rage with director Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's 'Mirzya'. Read our super-delightful interview with the talented duo.Harsh, everyone knows that your father Anil Kapoor is the hero of the masses. But we hear, that he said that you do not listen to him at all when it comes to your choices of films. Why so?Harshvardhan: I think that every decision that we take as performers, is instinctive. So, you must allow yourself the ability to go by your instincts, and what follows after that, is that if at all you have to sit and analyse as to what is wrong or right, then it's only your director who could help you tell the difference. You appear very fair to us now than what we see of you in the trailer?Harshvardhan: laughs Actually, I did not sport a tan I've almost spent the entire movie soaked in dirt. Also we spent enough time in Rajasthan, while shooting the contemporary timeline that you end up sporting this red-toned tan. While shooting in Rajasthan, you must have had the opportunity to taste a lot of local Rajasthani fare, didn't you?Saiyami: I was eating everything possible, but he was a more careful eater because he was supposed to play a lean stable boy so he had to look shrunken.Harshvardhan. I am not a completely bland eater, but yes, I am a very boring eater.Saiyami, having grown up in Nashik, which is not very happening as compared to Mumbai, how you used to recreate?Saiyami: Actually, it's a huge misconception that not much can happen in Nashik, which is false. So much more can happen in Nashik as opposed to Mumbai, because when you think of a pastime in Mumbai, it's a club or a mall and that's the end of it. But I'm very blessed to have grown up in Nashik. I used to swim in dams and lakes, I've grown up by the countryside. So, I feel very happy in being a country girl.So has your family now shifted base back to Mumbai?Saiyami: No, my parents live in Nashik. My sister Saunskriti and I live here in a bachelorette pad in Mumbai. We also hear that if not acting, you would've chosen cricket or badminton as your career?Saiyami: That's true because I was selected at the National level to represent in cricket, but by then, the glamour world had come calling, so I did not want to sport any bruises. But if ever given a chance to reconsider, Ill happily take up sports again. But did you all ever have a chance to play behind the scenes?Saiyami: Yes, we did quite often.Harshvardhan: When we finished wrapping up the shoot, we headed to Smaaash in Mumbai. As a kid, I was obsessed with cricket. I had trainer under Mohinder Amarnath, but somehow, I got hooked to football, and since then, I lost touch with cricket. But if I were to pick it up again and learn the technique for three months, I would be able to recover my position. smilesYou must be feeling quite fortunate to have worked with Rakeysh sir who is so much into sports?Saiyami: Yes. Definitely, Rakesyh sir and I got along really well, because he has been a water polo swimmer since his college days. He is a sportsman at heart. We play together every Sunday. Either we play badminton together or go swimming. Infact, he used to speak to me about sports while shooting for some difficult scenes. So, I am very obsessed with Sachin Tendulkar. Which, Sir used in his favour. He would speak ill about him in front of me whenever he had to see me get angry for a scene.Harsh, do you have any vivid memories of being on your dad's sets?Harshvardhan: I never used to visit his sets. I remember going on the outdoor locations of 'Deewana Mastana' with David sir Dhawan. It was only about Varun and me doing our own thing, So we never frequented dad's sets. But did you ever see him getting ready for a shot and feel enamoured to do the same one day?Harshvardhan: When you are born into a film family, it is a given that you get used to such a thought process and lifestyle, which I may not be able to explain to my best. Like when Sonam made her debut in 'Sawaariya', it was a different experience for me because I've lived and grown up with her. But when you are born to a father who is already a huge star, the responsibility is a given. Thing is that Dad used to travel a lot around the world, so he would pick up many films on his way back home. There was a time when I would head back from school and watch at least two films, every day. For me, that was my homework. I can proudly say that Anurag Kashyap, Sajid Khan and I have the largest collection of films. So do they include Bollywood films as well?Harshvardhan: Yes, but good Bollywood films. Otherwise the collection is mostly international and world cinema. There is such a difference in the ideologies between your father and you because Anil Sir is a quintessential Bollywood hero. You seem to be heading in the opposite direction. Why so?Harshvardhan: That's not true. I think the perception is being framed because my first two films are being directed by the likes of Rakeysh sir and Vikramaditya Motwane. Let me tell you, that after 'Delhi 6', nobody thought that 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' would become a huge Pan India success, but it did. Similarly, the opinion about Motwane is so because he has made critically successful films like 'Udaan' and 'Lootera'. But 'Bhavesh Joshi' is going to be his most commercial film, till date.So after Anil sir, who else do you look upto in Bollywood as the ideal hero?Harshvardhan: Aamir Sir Khan.Any films of his that you've seen often?Harshvardhan: 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Rang De Basanti'. For us, while growing up, these were the films that defined us.Saiyami, since your parents have both been models, did you receive any particular tips like Harsh does, because we know that his mother is a fitness freak?Saiyami: No, because to be honest, they never thought that I would become what I am now. I was a very normal kid for them and even now, they do not recognise me in the pictures that I show them from my shoots, because they never saw me that way. I was this kid, who would dirty herself in the mud and play, all-day long.So how did acting happen to you?Saiyami: I was studying in Xavier's College, Mumbai and the theatre culture is very strong. So I got actively involved in the theatrical activities. I even, did workshops with Neeraj Kabi and Ek Jut. So that helped me strengthen my craft, and then one day, it fell through. We are sure you would be extremely happy to be presented by one of our finest directors. What was the experience of working with Rakeysh sir? Was he tough on you?Harshvardhan: He wasn't. But I am very tough on myself, always. He is very calm but I am always very critical.Saiyami: He is very calm and he does not shout at all which makes people believe that there must be something wrong with him. We were shooting for 89-90 days on a set but even in the most pressurizing situations, he was very calm.Harshvardhan: You work better when you put pressure upon yourself as opposed to what others do to you. I am obsessed with watching the monitor. I cannot function unless I am convinced that I've got the scenes right or not. So with Mehra sir, sometimes, he'd let me watch the monitor and sometimes not. But Vikram Motwane will call me and tell me to come and check a shot. So I feel happy about it.Your opening shot is possibly the best we've seen in a while where the mask falls off your face.Harshvardhan: That's Saiyami's favourite shot.Saiyami: Unfortunately, the viewers have gotten very little of him to see now. But when you see the film, you'll know that he can emote so much through his eyes.Harshvardhan: But that helps for the character artistically. It is not a very dialogue heavy film. So you have to use your face a lot more while trying to keep the audience invested. Is there anyone from the current lot of actors that you admire?Harshvardhan: I like some of Ranbir Kapoor's films.Saiyami: I like Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor. I think, they both are very talented.Which of Sonam's works are your favourites?Harshvardhan: 'Neerja', 'Raanjhanaa' and 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'.Since three of you from the family are actors, there must be room for a lot of criticism, right?Harshvardhan: Absolutely, because as a family, if you aren't kept creatively grounded, then what's the point. If we were to ask you, what have been the high points for you while doing the film, what would it be?Saiyami: For me, it's the comeback of Gulzar saab as a writer after seventeen years. The fact that he has penned the story of your first film will always remain special for me.Harshvardhan: Gulzar saab definitely. Also, for Rakyesh Mehra. Our journey started together since 2008. We've wanted to do this film since then. We reconnected during 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' when I was 23, so I've grown up with him. Just that, every goal that we set together while filming this story has fallen through.Any high points in your lives while schooling or growing up?Harshvardhan: I was not very good with academics till the 9th standard. My grades improved after that while in college. As a child, my favourite subject was English. Infact, in college, I was studying script writing and now it helps to suggest changes in the script. I'd dare not touch 'Mirzya' because when Gulzar sir writes, he really knows his craft. But I have pitched in with my suggestions on 'Bhavesh Joshi', though.Saiyami: Anything sport-related was a highlight for me. I would get good grades, but my parents used to think that I have bribed my way through it because they never saw me studying because of my sports. smilesLet's now begin with asking you Harsh as to how the women in your life have influenced you, starting with Saiyami?Harshvardhan: She is a very strong woman. I've not come across too many strong women apart from the ones in my family. I don't know why I tend to come across more of damsels in distress. She gives you a lot of strength in weak moments. I'd only say that she has not discovered her complete potential as of yet, but I know that when she does, she will be raring to go.From Sonam?Harshvardhan: She has had a tough start with both 'Saawariya' and Delhi 6' not working. But to come from there to 'Neerja', it has been commendable. The amount of criticism that she faced in her early years, any of us in her place would've been distraught. But to rise from that position against the world, the way it seems now, I think she should sweep all the awards, this year.Rhea?Harshvardhan: She has got great business acumen and a sense of style.Your mom? It's a tough question. I like how she puts across her opinion spontaneously but it comes across as well-thought of. I think that's one thing I've taken from her. Also, her instincts about the people in my life are very spot-on.Saiyami, what are the reactions you are getting at home?Saiyami: There isn't much of a reaction because I myself do not seem excited to them. I am a person who keeps her emotions to herself. So I am calming them down saying that relax, it's just my first film.If we were to ask you about the most memorable takeaways while shooting for the film? What would it be?Harshvardhan: Three for me, one was when I had a head injury that caused concussions on my head, I couldn't think straight. Second was I had an ear injury while firing a gun because I had not worn ear plugs. So, that's one piece of advice that please wear earplugs while shooting with a gun because the noise and sound decibels are so strong, that they can cause some grievous results to your ears. Third, was the whole round of workshops that I undertook to get into the whole stable boy life. From handling horse, to learning how to ride them. That for me was the most challenging and the most exciting thing that I did.Saiyami: To pick out a few would be a task as I used to write down in my diary, everyday as to what was the highlight of the day. But if I can recall, quickly, one was when Harsh and I had to shoot under a tree under the scorching sun during our climax scene. We were waiting for four hours to shoot the scene so the conversations that we had under the tree, were where we became the best of friends. Personally, it has been a very life-defining experience for me, even though I know it is big-fat release on a professional term. You both seem to share a very different equation with Mehra, don't you?Saiyami: My conversations with him are very philosophical. There was an instance where we were shooting for a scene in the climax and I was wearing a bridal outfit. Suddenly, half the crew started running away and I could not get up because my outfit was heavy. But Sir, held me and I saw that there was a snake around. Sir then, told me that one moment everyone will be around and the next moment, you will not find anyone. So that's what our conversations sound like.Harshvardhan: I can never have that kind of a conversation with him. He is the kind who will tell me that he cannot say something nice about me, and then suddenly will end up saying something sweet. laughsWhich was the favourite performance that you've enjoyed of your Dad's?Harshvardhan: 'Nayak', 'Pukar'. 'Parinda', 'Dil Dhadakne Do', 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'My Wife's Murder'.Musically, the soundtrack of the movie is being so well received. Just before we let you go, your favourite picks from the soundtrack.Harshvardhan: 'Aave re Hitchki', 'Ek Nadi Thi' and 'Doli' for me, musically.Saiyami: 'Aave re Hitchki' and 'Doli' for me.
