The Six Faces of the Talented Karan Johar

He has briefly done small cameos in ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, ‘Om Shaanti Om’, ‘Fashion’, ‘Luck By Chance’ and ‘Hasee toh Phasee’. But he made a full-fledged debut in filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet. Karan went on records to admit it himself that becoming an actor was a disastrous choice.

He is one of the biggest names to be associated with Indian fashion. Fashion also plays a very important role in his films. His characters are always well-dressed, prim and proper, irrespective of what situations are they in. He has designed for friend Shah Rukh Khan in Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Chennai Express.

He returned to television as a judge for a reality dance show with Madhuri Dixit and Remo D’Souza. Not only were his judging skills praised, his dancing skills were also unleashed on the show.

Karan believes in glamour and glitz and will never settle for anything lesser than that. This is evident in his extremely stylish and controversial chat show, ‘Koffee With Karan’. With his exceptional oratory skills, it is a natural choice for Karan to have his own show. Started in 2004, the show has acquired a cult status of its own. Karan’s exceptional anchoring skills make him a huge favorite for other TV shows and award functions.

As the head of Dharma Productions, some of the recent path-breaking blockbusters have come out from Karan’s production house which was started by his father, Yash Johar. Today young directors and writers approach him for investment. ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Kurbaan’, ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, The Lunchbox, 2 States, ‘Kapoor and Sons’ and Raazi are a few honourable mentions.

As the 25 year-old son of an illustrious producer, it came as no surprise when Karan debuted with the landmark film, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. He followed up the success of K2H2 with the magnum opus, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ that broke box-office records across the world. Till date, he has directed six films including ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’, ‘My Name is Khan’, ‘Student Of the Year’ and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
