With ‘Piku’ he ensured that every daughter who saw the film, went rushing back home to hug her father. As the seventy-year old hypochondriac who irritates his daughter and everyone else around him to no end, Bachchan reminded us about the shifting responsibilities between parents and children. ‘Piku’ fetched him his fourth National Award.

‘Paa’ was an unconventional subject to deal with firstly. Never before had a commercial Hindi film explored the subject of Progeria so effectively until Big B aged backwards to play Auro. His portrayal won him his third National Award.

How often do you come across a sixty-plus old man, who sports a pigtail, is a chef and falls for a woman, half his age? But Big B pushed the envelope for himself when he ventured into this out-of-the-box comic caper that had us laughing aloud for days and months.

Wouldn’t we all love to have a dad like him who enjoyed his life to the fullest? As the philandering and extremely sexy Sam, Big B was the happiest moment in an otherwise dull movie. His equation with Abhishek Bachchan in the film proved to be a major highlight.

Can anyone ever stop chanting ‘Govinda Govinda’ everytime they see a glimpse of Big B with a vermillion-smeared forehead looking like the Godfather? Loosely inspired by the life of a renowned politico, Big B was enigmatic as Subhash Nagre in Ram Gopal Verma’s highly successful ‘Sarkar’.

As Debraj Sahai, the compassionate teacher who strengthens a blind and deaf student but eventually suffers from Alzheimer’s, Big B was marvelous. ‘Black’ fetched him his second National Award and undoubtedly, it remains one of his finest performances.

As Col Damle, Bachchan expressed the right amount of grit, pride and valour behind his uniform. He came across as a man, you would want to listen to for the rest of your life.

As a righteous senior police officer on the verge of retirement, Big B was inspirational. How he puts duty before priority is a lesson, he portrays effortlessly.

The feeling of watching ‘Baghban’ seems like yesterday. Bachchan single-handedly imparted the values of never forgetting your parents, no matter how far you go ahead in life. The climax speech can still move many to tears, even today.
