In times of despair and anxiety comes a film that feels like absolute sunshine. Watching the three-minute long trailer of filmmaker Shoojit SIrcar’s ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, filled me up with sheer joy than anything else that I’ve come across, this quarantine period.
Bringing an old folk tale from the Indian heartland to life, ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ is the story of Mirza (Bachchan) and Baankey (Khurrana), playing landlord and tenant who are Lucknow’s Tom and Jerry. Their dispute over an old haveli that they hold dear will lead them to form their clans against each other, making this slice-of-life dramedy, an experience worth looking forward to.
Written by Juhi Chaturvedi, Sircar’s frequent collaborator following the success of ‘Vicky Donor’, ‘Piku’ and ‘October’, ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ is a quirky twist to UP’s folk tales which portray Gulabo and Sitabo as women, who bicker over everyday issues that affect the common man. The folk tale is given a contemporary twist with Gulabo and Sitabo shown as men in the film.
Also lending their electrifying presence to the cast are Farrukh Jafar, Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala and Srishti Srivastava.
The movie is the first among several Indian film releases to hit the web directly, skipping the theatrical release.
‘Gulabo Sitabo’ premieres on Amazon Prime Video, from June 12, 2020 onwards.
