Why there is much more pressure on the current lot of newcomers?

More than a decade ago, when Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor made their respective debuts, the pressure wasn’t that pounding. As a result, content as frivolous as ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ and ‘Refugee’ found success and had opportunities knocking at the door for the then newcomers.
Circa 2016. The growing sensibilities among the audience has made it difficult for Bollywood newcomers to make a cut with substance.
Take for instance, Vicky Kaushal. The former made his debut with last year’s highly acclaimed ‘Masaan’, yet had to be ousted from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ as Deepika refused to star opposite a newcomer. But Tiger Shroff, who can barely flex his facial muscles while acting, is the new favorite among commercial filmmakers.
Which is why today’s Bollywood debuts are much more scrutinized and ruthlessly ripped off. While Diljit Dosanjh was lauded for ‘Udta Punjab’, Pooja Hegde faced flak for ‘Mohenjo Daro’.
Clearly, today’s audience believe that the first impression is the last impression.
As we pen this, Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher gear up for their debut in ‘Mirzya’ which releases on October 7th, 2016.
Let’s hope they get their break.
