In what could be an unconventional departure from his chocolate boy roles, Shahid Kapoor plays a devil-may-care rock musician who is a drug addict in ‘Udta Punjab’. Ever since the trailer has been launched, speculation is rife, that Shahid’s role is inspired by Yo Yo Honey Singh.
While the filmmakers deny any such comparisons, a source from the unit has revealed that, "The whole cult of the wild raunchy Punjabi rock star was spearheaded by Yo Yo Honey Singh. So somehow there would be a resemblance. I&39;d say Shahid plays a much wilder and far more aggressive version of Yo Yo. It&39;s a wild character who indulges in rampant substance abuse."
Yo Yo Honey Singh was at the most successful phase of his career when reports emerged that he was seeking therapy at a rehab in Chandigarh. The rapper was reportedly on steroids and was slapped by Shah Rukh Khan at an awards function. It was then that Honey Singh decided to take a brief sabbatical.
Going by the trailer of the movie, Shahid plays a rock musician who is at the peak of success when he gets embroiled into a drug controversy. Whether the resemblance with Honey Singh is real or not, only time will tell.
The film also stars Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh and is slated to release on June 17, 2016.
