US YouTuber Targeted by Kolkata Taxi Driver in Scam
A travel vlogger from the United States, Dustin, recently recounted a distressing experience after arriving in Kolkata, where he was reportedly scammed and threatened by a local taxi driver and an accomplice.
Instead of using an app-based service, Dustin chose a local taxi and clearly provided the address of Hotel Great Western on Park Street. However, the driver took him approximately 15 kilometers away to The Western hotel in Rajarhat, a completely different location.
During the journey, a man wearing a red shirt, believed to be associated with the driver, became aggressive. The fare, initially agreed at Rs 700, was later demanded to be increased first to Rs 800 and then to Rs 1000. When Dustin refused, the man issued threats, claiming mafia connections and warning of physical harm.
The driver then halted the vehicle and instructed Dustin to change to another taxi. Before leaving, Dustin faced additional demands for a “parking charge” of Rs 100, with the man refusing to let the new taxi depart without payment.
Despite the ordeal, Dustin remained calm and noted that such incidents are unfortunately common in many countries. He expressed that this experience would not affect his overall fondness for India but decided to rely solely on app-based taxi services like Uber going forward.
The video ing the encounter has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation and prompting users to call for swift action by local authorities.
