Bollywood`s vibrant music industry is often filled with fascinating behind-the-scenes stories, and veteran playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya recently added a new one to the list. In a candid interview, he made a striking claim about the chart-topping song "Gori Gori" from the 2004 blockbuster Main Hoon Na, alleging that he, not Anu Malik, was the original voice behind the track.
Abhijeet stated, “Jab bhi kabhi Anu Malik ka koi ganna hota hai na, toh Anu Malik ka bas chale toh woh picturize bhi khud pe kare. He is so crazy; woh bol sakta hai ki yeh gaana bahut achha hai, main gaaunga, aur mere upar hi picturise kar do. Itna crazy hai." He added, "I’m saying this now because I’m very selfish — it doesn’t matter anymore. It`s no one`s time now.” This remark highlights Abhijeet`s perception of Malik`s deep involvement and desire to even feature in the songs he created.
The singer then dropped a bombshell regarding one of Main Hoon Na`s most popular dance numbers. "Jaise uss picture (Main Hoon Na) mein Chori Chori Chori Chori, voh mera gaya hua tha, can you believe that?" Abhijeet exclaimed, referring to the song "Gori Gori". He continued, "Maine kya phadu gaya tha. Maine aur KK ne. Phir dekhta hoon toh bhaisaab ka voice aa gaya." This revelation suggests that Abhijeet, along with KK, had initially recorded the song, only to find Anu Malik`s vocals in the final version.

He mentioned that while Malik typically provided a few days for rehearsal, "Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha" was recorded on the same day he was called, without prior practice. "Set pe bula ke gawaya achanak, dubbing karwaya. I’m capable, fatafat gaa diya," he said, adding, "Lekin agar fatafat ki jagah tayyari karke aate, to ye gaana isse bhi bada historical hota." He believes that with adequate rehearsal, the song could have achieved even greater success.
Main Hoon Na, Farah Khan`s directorial debut, was a massive hit, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, Suniel Shetty, and Amrita Rao. Its soundtrack, featuring "Gori Gori", "Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha", and "Tumse Milke Dil Ka Jo Haal", became iconic, contributing significantly to the film`s worldwide earnings of ₹70.40 crore.
