APRIL 12,2024

OTT releases are redefining content by making stories the lead. With many movies releasing on Netflix this weekend, what grabbed our attention was the Diljit Dosanjh-Parineeti Chopra starrer Amar Singh Chamkila. The biopic shares a rather emotional yet inspirational narrative of Punjab's first ever rockstar.

The Imtiaz Ali directorial explores emotions in a way that will connect with you instantly. After what felt like a detour for the filmmaker after delivering back-to-back flops like Love Aaj Kal 2 and web series like She Season 2 and Dr. Arora, it seems Amar Singh Chamkila is Ali's redemption project.

As soon as the trailer for Chamkila was revealed, fans were waiting with baited breath for more than one reason. What made us even more excited was the reunion of musical magicians Imtiaz Ali, AR Rahman, Mohit Chauhan, and Irshad Kamil.

Amar Singh Chamkila review

The filmmaker chose April 12 as its official release date on Netflix. With many waiting to see Diljit Dosanjh don the musical hat of Punjab's Elvis, Amar Singh Chamkila, we are here to tell you if the movie is worth watching or not.

For the uninitiated, the film explores his coming of age, rise to stardom, struggle to stay at the top, and the cost of having a voice. Before you dissect the musical biopic based on its trailer and what your friends or colleagues must have said, let's tell you five highlights to watch out for in Amar Singh Chamkila.

1. Phenomenal performance

Diljit Dosanjh gets into the skin of the character, thus making us an inch closer to the real-life Chamkila. After acting in several movies on celluloid, the man of the hour is back, and it feels like he has given his all to the movie.

It is interesting how Diljit approaches the character and seamlessly blends into it, making us forget if this is a movie or a real-life story we are living in.

2. Hard-hitting dialogues

Considering the film is helmed by Imtiaz Ali, it would be no shocker that the film already sounds poetic and has some goosebumps-giving dialogue. One of the dialogues that even made people whistle during the trailer was "Yeh banduk wale hai, Inka kaam hai goli chalana."

3. Musical therapy

Like we mentioned, the cult trio is back, and how! Imtiaz Ali, AR Rahman, and Irshad Kamil join forces to deliver yet another magical masterpiece that has already become one of the most anticipated albums of the year.

The three artists reunite for the Netflix release after almost a decade. Their last collaboration was for Ali's Tamasha in 2015.

4. A fresh pairing

While the movie centers around Diljit Dosanjh's character, Amar Singh Chamkila, what also mesmerizes us is Parineeti Chopra's character. It is safe to say that this one must have been her career-redefining performance.

She plays Chamkila's on-screen wife and co-performer, Amarjot Kaur. The actress wasn't seen delivering any dialogue in the trailer, but she manages to steal the show in the film.

5. A new Imtiaz Ali

While many points of the storyline will give you a home-like, familiar feeling, we can vouch that this is the new Imtiaz Ali, who is only going to get massively appreciated from here.

Like Anurag Kashyap said in his Instagram stories, this is the filmmaker we have never seen before, and now we probably understand why.
