India won its first World Cup in the 1983 World Cup Finals, captained by Kapil Dev. K. Srikanth hit 38 runs, M. Amarnath hammered 26 runs, and Sandeep Patil scored 27 runs among many other heroes who helped India win. In addition to scoring a run with the bat and dismissing three West Indies players for 12 runs, Mohinder Amarnath was named Man of the Match.

The great West Indies team won the 1975 World Cup final between the West Indies and Australia. Clive Lloyd, the captain of the West Indies, was named Man of the Match for his 102-run innings. Australia scored 291 runs in total. Despite scoring 62 runs, Australian captain Ian Chappel's squad was unable to win the championship.

Indian team's World Cup victory in 1983

In one match from the 1983 World Cup that wasn't shown on television, Kapil Dev set a record by scoring 175 runs against Zimbabwe. Although there wasn't a BBC strike, four matches were played that day, and India's match versus Zimbabwe wasn't as crucial because of India's poor World Cup performance. Kapil Dev had to stand on the crease for a while due to early Indian team wickets. He played 175 without being out in just 138 deliveries.

The 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka is where the catchphrase "Dhoni finishes off in style" originated. In this game, Sri Lanka gave India a 274-run target. Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli kept the scoreboard going with early Indian opening wickets. Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni took on the task of leading India to the World Cup after Gambhir and Kohli were fired. Dhoni hit a six to end India's run chase and lead his country to its second World Cup victory.
