Kim Soo-hyun Breaks Down While Addressing Dating Rumours With Kim Sae-ron

South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun, 37, held an emotional press conference on Monday, addressing the controversy surrounding the tragic death of actress Kim Sae-ron. The conference, which took place after weeks of heated accusations and speculation, marked the first time Kim publicly spoke about his past relationship with Kim Sae-ron, who died by apparent suicide in February.
Kim Soo-hyun took a firm stance against allegations made by Kim Sae-ron`s family, who had insinuated that pressure from Kim or his agency had contributed to the late actress’s tragic decision. Addressing the claims, he stated, “I couldn’t let it be. I couldn’t accept (them) coercing me to take what’s fake as the truth. I never dated [Kim Sae-ron] when she was a minor. Except for the fact that both of us were actors, our relationship was just like that of any other ordinary couple. And it is not true that she had made this tragic choice because of me or my agency pressuring her over a debt.”
His statement was a direct response to rumours that their past relationship had begun before Kim Sae-ron became an adult. He clarified that they had dated for a year when she was of legal age, refuting any claims of wrongdoing.

One of the most controversial aspects of the situation was Kim Soo-hyun`s previous denial of his relationship with Kim Sae-ron. He admitted that he had kept their romance a secret, especially during the airing of his hit drama Queen of Tears, explaining, “I was in the same situation when [Kim Sae-ron] posted a picture of her and me when Queen of Tears was airing. I was together with her for about a year, about 4 years before the drama aired. But at that time, I denied our relationship. I fully understand that criticising my choice is justified.”
The actor admitted that his decision to conceal their past relationship was driven by a need to protect the drama’s cast, crew, and production team. He elaborated, “When Queen of Tears was airing, I had so much to protect as its lead actor. What would have happened if I had admitted to a year-long relationship? What would happen to the actors, the staff who were working overnight, and the production team, who had everything staked in that project? What would happen to our agency’s employees? I’m willing to receive any criticism that says I am selfish and cowardly.”
While some may view his actions as self-serving, others understand the immense pressure actors face in maintaining a flawless public image, especially in South Korea’s highly scrutinised entertainment industry.

Ending on a resolute note, he affirmed his commitment to proving his innocence. “I have done what I have done. I will take any criticism for that. But the things I haven’t done, I haven’t done. I want to clear my name. I will not ask for trust. I will prove it. Thank you,” he ended.

I have always been too preoccupied with holding on to what I have. I couldn’t even trust the goodwill that came my way, always fearing loss and harm and running away, denying everything.
