Die Hard star Bruce Willis' condition has worsened nearly a year after his family announced his retirement from Hollywood movies as he was diagnosed with Aphasia. On Thursday, the actor's family posted an official statement of the 67-year-old having a more specific diagnosis of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).

The Die Hard actor was diagnosed with Aphasia, a condition where one's cognitive abilities are compromised. It causes the loss of ability to communicate or express. With symptoms further progressing, the doctors came to the conclusion of Bruce Willis was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia. His family said,"While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis. FTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone."

What Is Frontotemporal Dementia?

The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration describes FTD as a group of brain disorders caused by degeneration of the frontal or temporal lobes of the brain that can impact communication, movement, and speech. Aphasia can be one of the major symptoms of the same. The association also describes frontotemporal degeneration as "an inevitable decline in functioning," with a life expectancy of seven to thirteen years.

Bruce Willis Family Statement

"Today there are no treatments for the disease, a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead," Bruce's family posted on Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration's official website. The statement further read, "As Bruce's condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research."

The official statement was signed by Bruce Willis' wife Emma Hemming, ex-wife Demi Moore, and his five children Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel, and Evelyn. Commenting on the actor's prolific career over four decades, his family said, "Bruce has always found joy in life - and has helped everyone he knows to do the same."

"It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and to all of us. We have been so moved by the love you have all shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time. Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible," the statement further read.
