This year is lined up with some exceptional content, especially in the OTT space. One of the recently announced projects by Netflix has already taken the internet by storm. It is Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra starrer Chamkila. The film is based on Punjab's original rock star, Amar Singh Chamkila.

Helmed by Imtiaz Ali, Chamkila marks the first collaboration between the filmmaker and the two actors. Diljit Dosanjh will play the role of musician Amar Singh Chamkila, while Parineeti Chopra will play his on-screen wife, Amarjot Kaur.

Taking it to Instagram, Netflix shared the first look of Chamkila and even announced its release date.

Chamkila release date is out

Netflix shared the first glimpse of Imtiaz Ali's upcoming biopic. The motion poster featured Diljit as it introduced his character, Amar Singh Chamkila. The singer-actor is seen without a turban.


Sharing the video, Netflix wrote, "Maahaul bann jaata tha jab vo chedta tha saaz, kuch aisa hi tha Chamkila ka Andaaz (banjo emoji) (A crowd would gather when he sang, such was his style). @imtiazaliofficial's AmarSinghChamkila is arriving on April 12, only on Netflix!"

The upcoming musical drama narrates the untold true tale of Punjab's original rockstar of the masses. The movie revolves around the lives of Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot Kaur, and how music was ingrained in his blood.

The musician, his wife, and members of their musical band were shot at sight and assassinated on March 8, 1988. The reason still remains unknown.

The filmmaker opened up about the experience of creating this masterpiece in the iconic music star's life and why he chose Diljit and Parineeti to headline the project.

"Making Amar Singh Chamkila about the life of the iconic music star of the masses has been a unique journey for me. I could not have asked for better actors than the immensely talented Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra to play in this film, especially since it involves some live singing," he said.

Imtiaz further added, "The film follows the crazed popularity of Chamkila's daring songs, which society could neither ignore nor swallow. Having Netflix as a partner, I am humbled to take our story to millions of viewers not only in India but around the globe."

Diljit Dosanjh on playing Amar Singh Chamkila

Calling it one of his most challenging life experiences, he thanked the Jab We Met director for showing immense faith in him to portray this character.

"Playing Amar Singh Chamkila has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life, and I am thrilled to be returning to Netflix with yet another exciting story. It has been a pleasure to work with Parineeti and the entire team that has worked extremely hard to bring this beautiful story to life," the singer-actor said.

He further elaborated, "To be able to sing to Rahman sir's exemplary music was a meditative experience, and I hope I have been able to do justice to his vision. Thank you, Imtiaz Bhajee, for believing in me for this role."

Chamkila will stream on Netflix starting April 12.
