Kirti Kulhari has a lot of reasons to celebrate. From playing instrumental parts in 2019’s 200-crore grossers ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ and ‘Mission Mangal’, to marking her digital presence with ‘Four More Shots Please’ and ‘Bard of Blood’, the actress has had an eventful decade in the industry. Since her film debut with ‘Khichdi’ in 2010, the actress has had an impressive filmography featuring some of the most unconventional, niche Hindi films including ‘Shaitaan’, ‘Pink’, ‘Indu Sarkar’ and ‘Blackmail’.
The actress was recently seen in the second season of ‘Four More Shots Please’ which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. She plays Anjana Menon, a striking lawyer who wishes to live her life to the fullest in her thirties, while also being the doting, disciplinarian mom to her four-year old daughter.
When asked about why is she the ideal choice for playing the strict woman on-screen and if she would love to break away from that image, Kirti responds, “I would love to do a character where the people closest to me would say, “Damn we did not know that Kirti has this side too”. It would be great to find something to do where the character is nowhere close to what I am in life.”
‘Four More Shots Please’ has definitely busted the myth that thick female friendships do not exist. Asserting her views on the same, Kirti adds, “We are much more aware today that thick female friendships have existed always and they still do. A lot of misconceptions about women friendships stem from our industry itself. The industry lives in their own bubble and they like to create their own reality. Which is far away from what is actually a reality. Because of the show, we see girls posting pictures with their girl gang on social media. It’s not like they’ve created their gangs after watching ‘FMSP’. They’ve existed and the success of the show goes to prove that girls relate to the show. Bollywood is a very bad place to take inspiration from or to believe everything that it shows as the truth. Yes, sisterhood has never been shown in such a manner, in all its glory. Where have you seen stories about a woman being shown, forget four women? There are hardly any projects where women are leading. Barring a few exceptions. Of, course the phenomenon has changed over the years, but mostly Bollywood has been about, ‘I am the hero and you could be my wife or girlfriend and be by my side’. But now, the narrative has changed. Women are right there leading the way, sharing their stories, presenting their kind out there. Our show is just another dimension to that perspective. It’s my story, the story of my friends and the story of our love and friendship.”
Kirti’s next is the official Hindi adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best-selling novel, ‘The Girl on the Train’. When quizzed about her role, Kirti says, “Well, ‘A Girl on the Train’ again happens to be a project, led by three women. I play the role of an investigative cop. Now, if you’ve read the book, you may recollect that there isn’t much of a role for the cop. But in the film, it’s a full-fledged, parallel role to Parineeti’s Chopra character who is playing the lead protagonist. Ribhu Dasgupta, the director has altered the narrative. I play a British cop and the film has been shot in London. I can’t talk much about the film, since it’s a thriller. But it’s absolutely exciting to do this film as I’ve never played a cop before. Also the look I’m donning in the film is something that hasn’t been attempted previously. I hope the situation gets better as the film is pretty much ready for release.”
What else does she have coming up next?
“I also have a web film where I play a singer. It’s a road film, which is very beautiful, simple and a slice-of-life film that conveys very important themes. There is also Pawan Kripalani’s film called ‘Charu’ which is a gothic thriller cum romance. He is another director I’m very fond of. So yes, there is a great lline-up ahead of me.” signs off Kirti.
