To combat drug trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) operates under the supervision of Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun. It gathers information on ganja and synthetic drugs, identifies suppliers and networks, and works alongside the local police to make necessary arrests.
It was on June 17 that Nungambakkam police arrested Pradeep Kumar, alias Prada (38), of Sankari in Salem, and John (38), a Ghanaian national, after they found possession of 11 grams of cocaine. These arrests were made based on ANIU`s inputs.

During the interrogation, Pradeep said he had supplied drugs to T. Prasad, a dismissed AIADMK functionary, who then sold the cocaine to Srikanth in a local Nungambakkam pub last month.
Police sources further revealed that Prasad and Srikanth worked together in a film production, and the latter frequently socialised with the offenders.
The police also searched the actor`s residence in the Nungambakkam Lake area, where small quantities of cocaine were allegedly seized. On Monday morning, Srikanth was detained for questioning and later arrested after his blood test for narcotics came back positive.
The cocaine was reportedly sourced from Bengaluru through Pradeep and John, who purchased it for INR 7,000. They sold it in Chennai for INR 12,000.
Srikanth made his acting debut in 2000 with the Tamil film Roja Kootam. He has appeared in many notable movies, including the Tamil remake of 3 Idiots, titled Nanban (2012). He has received multiple awards, including Nandi Awards and Filmfare Awards.
