Randeep Hooda and Sunny Deol from Jaat
Bollywood`s recent action offering, `Jaat`, starring Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Viineet Kumar Siingh, launched into theatres on April 10. However, instead of just box office numbers, the film is now making headlines for sparking significant controversy. The Christian community has raised strong objections, demanding a ban on the film due to a scene they deem deeply offensive.
Representatives from the Christian community state this portrayal has severely hurt their religious sentiments. They argue the scene amounts to a desecration of the pulpit and appears to be part of what they allege is a "deliberate conspiracy to defame the Christian faith in India". The inclusion of violence and coercion within the sacred space has been particularly condemned. Notably, this controversial scene was visible even in the film`s promotional trailer.
The reaction from the Christian community has been swift and firm. Initially, protests were planned outside cinema halls screening `Jaat`. However, police intervention halted these demonstrations. Undeterred, community representatives escalated the matter by submitting a formal memorandum to the Joint Commissioner.
Their demands are clear: an immediate ban on the screening of `Jaat` in theatres. Furthermore, they are calling for legal action against the film`s cast and crew under laws pertaining to religious disrespect, labelling the portrayal a “deliberate insult” to their faith. A video even surfaced showing protestors chanting slogans against actor Randeep Hooda. The community has issued a 48-hour ultimatum, warning of intensified protests if their demands are not addressed within two days.

The plot follows a mysterious man (Deol) who arrives in a village suffering under the oppression of Ranatunga (Hooda) and his wife Bharathi (Regena), eventually taking on the fight for the villagers` freedom. Despite the controversy, the film received mixed reviews upon release and, according to Sacnilk, crossed the INR 50 crore mark at the Indian box office within its first week.
The Scene Sparking Outrage
At the heart of the dispute is a specific sequence within the film. It depicts actor Randeep Hooda standing inside a church, positioned directly beneath a crucifix located above the sacred pulpit – considered the church`s most holy space. Other shots show the congregation praying, juxtaposed with depictions of hooliganism and intimidation occurring within the church premises.Representatives from the Christian community state this portrayal has severely hurt their religious sentiments.
