It was started in 1935 by BCCI as India`s first national-level cricket tournament. The iconic trophy was donated by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala.
Ranji Trophy format
From the recent format in 2018-19 onwards, the tournament adopted a three-tier system, with five teams qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Matches in the league stage last for 4 days, and knockout matches go on for 5 days. Each team that wins gets 6 points outright.

28 teams from all states of India participate in the oldest format of cricket. Some union territories like Delhi, Chandigarh, and J&K also have their teams.
