Birds That Swim Like Penguins
Puffin
Nicknamed “sea parrots,” puffins flap their wings underwater like penguins, reaching speeds up to 55 mph while diving for fish.
Common Murre
This black-and-white seabird can dive over 150 feet deep and uses its wings to swim just like a penguin, despite being able to fly too.
Auk
Closely related to puffins, auks are agile underwater swimmers. Though some species are extinct, their swimming style mirrored that of penguins.
Cormorant
Cormorants dive with precision, using powerful webbed feet and partially spread wings to swim deep and fast in pursuit of prey.
Dovekie (Little Auk)
These tiny Arctic birds use their wings for underwater propulsion and are known for their incredible agility below the surface.
Loon
Loons are expert divers that use their legs for propulsion. Their sharp bills and strong strokes make them deadly fish hunters in northern lakes.
Razorbill
A close relative of puffins and murres, razorbills flap their wings underwater to chase fish. Their black-and-white coloring mimics penguin patterns.
