Backward travel planning 2026
What is Backward travel planning?
Starting with the experience you want at the end of your trip, working backwards to decide where to go, when to travel, how long to stay & what to book.
Start with your end goal
Instead of asking, “Where should I go?”, begin with “What do I want from this trip?” It could be relaxing, adventure, nightlife, food or simply switching off.
Decide your ideal final day
Imagine your ideal last day. Where are you waking up? What are you doing? How relaxed or adventurous do you feel? This gives your itinerary a clear destination.
Work backwards from that experience
Once you know your desired ending, plan the days before it in reverse. Ask what needs to happen 1-2 days earlier to make that final experience possible.
Lock your fixed commitments first
Start with things that cannot easily move; flights, trains, concerts or hotel check-ins. These become the anchors around which everything else is built.
Then choose your route
Work backwards geographically. Decide where you need to be before your final destination, how long each transfer will take. This helps prevent unnecessary chaos
Build your accommodation plan
Choose hotels based on the route you have created. Your final stay should make the last day convenient rather than forcing you into a stressful transfer.
