International acclaim

While rejected domestically upon release, it was selected for the Venice Film Festival & Toronto International Film Festival, gaining a strong cult following.

Real weapons on the set

While most of the battle scenes used props, the stunt actors (masters of martial art Kalari) were the only ones permitted to use real weapons during filming.

Fictionalized romance

The core romance between Asoka and Princess Kaurwaki is largely fictional. Karuvaki was a later queen & there is no evidence she was a fisherman`s daughter.

Different leading ladies

SRK wanted Aishwarya to play the female lead. When that didn`t happen, the role was offered to Karisma Kapoor, who rejected it before it went to Kareena Kapoor.

Donated the `H`

When asked why the `H` was dropped from "Ashoka" in the film`s title, Shah Rukh Khan remarked that he "donated the `H` to history".

Box office failure in India

Despite heavy anticipation and a massive global release for a Hindi film at the time, Asoka flopped at the Indian box office.

Backlash and bans

Asoka faced severe backlash and protests, politicians & historians accusing the makers of distorting history and misrepresenting the local people.
