April 23 is World Book and Copyright Day, a day to celebrate the great writers who have shaped world literature. This year, lets take a look at some Bollywood films that were inspired by classic novels that still resonate with readers even after centuries.

Devdas
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film is adapted from a Bengali classic novel ‘Devdas’ penned by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Apart from this version, Devdas has been adapted to screen 20 times in multiple languages, even internationally.
Omkara
Vishal Bharadwaj’s 2006 film is inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragic drama ‘Othello’.
Saawariya
Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor’s debut film was loosely based on ‘White Nights’, a short story by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Aisha
Sonam Kapoor’s 2010 film Aisha is inspired from Jane Austen’s 1815 novel titled ‘Emma’.
