Truly Allah Ke Bande: Kailash Kher

He got married to Mumbai-based film student Sheetal, a Kashmiri Pandit, on 14 February 2009, and they have a 6-year-old son Kabir. According to kher, the marriage was arranged.

His band Kailasa was cordially invited by the PM to accompany him in his very first USA tour, where they performed in the SAP Center Community reception at San Jose, California on 27 September 15. The grand opening by Kailasa followed by the amazing speech from the PM mesmerized the audience.

Way before our honorable PM Narendra Modi started the cleanliness campaign, Kher was doing the same personally. Therefore, it was no wonder that he was one of the foremost nominations of NaMos Navaratna -9 gems, and was heartily applauded for his contribution in social awareness. Kher had also lent his voice to the Clean India theme song.

He entered the music industry, by singing jingles for TV and radio commercials. He received critical acclaim for his unique style of singing.

Later, after he relocated to Delhi with his family, he graduated from Delhi University through the correspondence program. When he moved to Mumbai, he already had a few friends in Mumbai who were connected to the film industry. His name was recommended to musician Ram Sampath, who was then looking for a different voice for a jingle for Nakshatra diamonds. The jingle may not have given Kher instant recognition but fetched him Rs.5000 which he needed desperately at that time "just to survive.

He experimented with a family friends Indian handicraft export business till 1999. His depression phase started and he even attempted to commit suicide once, in the beginning of the year 1999, when his business collapsed. He went to Singapore and Thailand, and stayed there for six months.

He has sung more than 700 songs for Bollywood. He is a prominent singer in Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Urdu and Rajasthani languages.

He was inspired by the classical musician Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and the Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

With his debut single Allah Ke Bande in Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part 2 in 2003, Kailash Kher has been swaying over and over again with his music. As the maestro turns a year older, we bring you eight fun facts that prove why is he truly Allah Ke Bande.
