Remembering Jagjit Singh

Mujhse Bichhad Ke Khush Rehte Ho. Meri Tarah Tum Bhi Jhoote HoOn May 10, 2007, Jagjit sang the ghazal written by the last Moghul Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar Lagta Nahin hai Dil Mera to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Indias First War of Independence -1857.He was supposed to sing with another ghazal legend Ghulam Ali at the Fever Unplugged concert in Mumbai on September 24, 2011. Unfortunately, Jagjit couldnt perform at the concert as he was admitted the day before as he suffered brain haemorrhage.

Hum Jise Gungunaa Nahin Sakte, Waqt Ne Aisa Geet Kyun GayaHe was the only singer to have sung songs written by Indias ex-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in albums Nayi Disha -1999 and Samvedna -2002.In the picture, Jagjit is seen at Radio Citys studios for the show Musical-E-Azam.

Janam Maran Ka Avirat Phera, Jeevan Banjaaron Ka DeraAaj Yahan Kal Kahan Kuch Hai, Kaun Jaanta Kidhar SaveraAndhiyara Aakash Aseemit, Pranon Ke pankhon Ko ToleJagjit churned out popular ghazals in films like Prem Geet -1981, Arth and Saath Saath -1982, and TV serials Mirza Ghalib -1988 and Kahkashan -1991.

Tum chale jaoge toh sochenge,Humne kya khoya humne kya payaJagjit was also known for using technolody and modern approach in the traditional art of ghazal. He is also responsible for the revival of ghazals in India. Prior to Jagjit, Indian ghazal singers werent as popular as their Pakistani counterparts.

Rekhaon Ka Khel Hai Muqaddar, Rekhaon Se Maat Kha Rahe HoAnother major tragedy struck Jagjit when her step-daughter Monica Chaudhary committed suicide in 2009.

Deeply saddened by her sons death, Chitra stopped singing after the incident. However, this wasnt the only tragedy that hit Jagjit and Chitras life.

Aawaara Hai Galiyon Mein, Main Aur Meri TanhayiJaayein Toh Kahaan Jaayein Har Mod Pe Rusawaayi. Main Aur Meri TanhayiJagjit, along with wife Chitra, was the first recording artist in the history of Indian music to use digital multi-track recording for their -Indias first digitally recorded album, Beyond Time -1987.

Shaam Se Aankh Mein Nami Si Hai, Aaj Phir Aapki Kami Si HainJagjit met another ghazal singer Chitra Singh. Their common interest soon transformed into love and the couple got married. They became the first ever successful duo act -husband-wife in the history of recorded Indian music.

Jeete rehne ki saza de, zindagi ae zindagiAb to marne ki dua de zindagi ae zindagiIn 1965, Jagjit migrated to Mumbai with hopes of becoming a successful singer. However, Jagjit had a tough time initially in Mumbai. He was forced to eke out a living by singing in musical gatherings and house concerts. Lady luck soon shone on as he was offered to sing in a Gujarati movie Dharti Na Chhoru. Soon, he started singing in Hindi films and also started cutting ghazal albums.Some of his popular songs include Kaagaz Ki Kashti, Chaak Jigar Ke, Kal Chadhanvi Ki Raat thi, and Shaam Se Aankh Mein Nami Si Hai.

Yeh Jo Zindagi Ki Kitaab Hai, Yeh Kitaab Bhi Kya Kitaab HaiKahin Ek Haseen Sa Khawaab Hai, Jahin Jaan Leva Azaab HaiBorn in a Sikh family, Jagjits real name was Jagmohan. It was later changed by his father following the advice of his guru.It was his father who first recognized his talent and sent him to a visually-challenged teacher Pandit Chhaganlal Sharma. Later, Jagjit also trained under the tutelage of Ustad Jamal Khan of Sainia Gharana. He was trained in various forms like Thumri, Khayal and Dhrupad.

The Padma Bhushan awardee not only revived the dying genre of ghazals, but took it to an altogether new level and made a mark for himself in the Indian music industry.
