Musafir Hoon Yaaron - Parichay -1972The tune for this song was originally composed by SD Burman. Since he never used it, his son RD Burman made use of it. Incidently, this film directed by Gulzar was inspired by the 1965 Hollywood classic The Sound Of Music.

Yaara Sili Sili - Lekin -1991Considered one of her best songs, it helped Lata Mangeshkar bag her third National Award. Not many know that the word Sili means slowly.

Do Deewane Shehar Mein - Gharaonda -1977Aab-O-Dana, a word from the song became popular but very few know its meaning. It means water and food. This was one of the very few Bollywood songs sung by Runa Laila and Bhupinder Singh.

Saathiya - Saathiya -2002This was the first time Gulzar wrote lyrics for a Yash Raj movie. Words in the song Saundhi Si Hasi means perfumed laughter.

Dil To Bachha Hai Ji - Ishqiya -2010Gulzar wrote a memorable song on the saying, which loosely translates there is a child inside everyone of us. The track inspired Madhur Bhandarkar to name his 2011 film as Dil To Baccha Hai Ji.

Aanewala Pal - Gol Maal -1979The song is a work of a rare trio comprising Gulzar, RD Burman and Kishore Kumar. Its meaningful lyrics, which urge us to live life to the fullest, is remembered even today. It won Gulzar his second National Award.

Tujhse Naaraz Nahin Zindagi - Masoom -1983The song is sung by Bengali singer Anoop Ghoshal along with Lata Mangeshkar. This was the first and the only time that Anoop sang for a Hindi film.

Chaiyya Chaiyya - Dil Se -1998It is said that this song introduced the Sufi genre in Bollywood. Another song from the film called Thaiyya Thaiyya was also based on Chaiyyan Chaiyya, but it was not used in the movie. The song was used for the opening credits of the 2006 Hollywood movie Insideman.

Is Mod Se Jate Hain - Aandhi -1975Is Mod Se Jate Hain was originally a poem written by Gulzar. When he was writing songs for Aandhi, he used it.

Mera Kuchh Saaman - Ijaazat -1987RD Burman refused to compose this song initially as he found the lyrics weird. Later on, however, when Asha Bhosale started humming the lines, Burman was so impressed that he agreed to compose it. Gulzar won his first National Award for this song.

Satrangi Re - Dil Se -1998The line in the song Ishq Par Zor Nahin, Hai Yeh Woh Aatish Ghalib is also a shayari -poem written by Mirza Ghalib. Out of admiration, Gulzar used the line in this song that was sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy in whispers. This is the first time that Gulzar joined hands with composer AR Rahman.

Chappa Chappa Charkha Chale - Maachis -1996This is the only song that Hariharan and Suresh Wadkar have sung together. Although its hugely popular even today, very few people know the meaning of the lyrics. The line in the song Bauni Bauni Beriyon Tale means under the small berry trees! Apart from writing the lyrics, Gulzar also directed and scripted the movie. The film won the National Film award.

Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wahi - Mausam -1975The touching song is based on the great poet Mirza Ghalibs lyrics Jee Dhoondta Hai. Gulzar reworked on it by adding his own touch. But he gave due credit to Ghalib.
