Sartek

Besides being a leading name in Indian electronica, Sarthak Sardana aka Sartek is a globally acclaimed act having opened for international stalwarts namely Martin Garrix and Paul Van Dyk at popular electronic music festivals. A former Chartered Accountant, the New Delhi based producer is the only Indian to be signed on the roster of Revealed Recordings that features Afrojack, Tiesto and KSHMR.

Team Radio City Freedom caught up with the artiste ahead of his recent collaboration with Punjabi sensation GSD Singh on ‘Tere Karke (Ballin’ Ciaga)’

Having made a name for yourself globally with EDM, what made you shift gears towards Punjabi music?

Sartek
: After releasing music on multiple international labels, I sat down with my team at Shark & Ink and decided I really wanted to create a song for the local community. I’m a big fan of Punjabi music and still recall only dancing to Punjabi numbers as a kid. However, my life took a different path that exposed me to a lot of English music and that overtook my childhood love for Punjabi music. But you never forget your first love and that’s why years later, I’ve now come full circle back to my roots with Tere Karke.

How was it working with GSD Singh?

Sartek
: Very different! I've worked with vocalists from different parts of the world for my previous releases but working with a Punjabi one was a whole new learning experience because the Punjabi industry works in a very different way than most others.

From a Chartered Accountant to a leading name in EDM today, how did that happen?

Sartek
: Coming from a family full of Chartered Accountants, there was always a pressure to become one, another mango in the basket. But I’ve always felt a little out of place, never comfortable with the idea of crunching numbers at a desk from 9 to 5 and so I decided to join a music production school in New Delhi. At the end of the course, it took me 2 years to master this skill and subsequently, I released my debut track on Magik Muzik (an imprint of the legendary DJ - Tiësto). That was 2009; fast forward to ten years later and I can’t think of anything that gives me greater joy today than making music, it definitely challenges me to be a better version of myself.

How does it feel to be the only Indian act to feature on the roster of Revealed Recordings that include Afrojack, Tiesto and KSHMR?

Sartek
: It was indeed a “dream come true” moment to have one of my tracks signed to the world’s biggest dance music producer’s record label. I was fortunate to have been discovered by Hardwell who stumbled across my soundcloud and downloaded my track called Backed Up, which was available as a free download. He liked the track so much that he constantly played it in his live sets and podcasts. Right from the beginning, I was always a fan of his record label - Revealed Recordings and dreamed of having a track on it. I started working on music that he would like to release/play and that’s when he picked up my track ‘Don’t Need Love’. It’s been an honor working with him, he’s an absolute professional when it comes to picking music for his label thus making me improve my music quality every time I sit down to produce. Collaborating with Hardwell is the biggest dream I’ve ever had and hopefully it might come true soon :)

Contemporary electronica acts that you admire?

Sartek
: Bonobo, Bob Moses, Monica Dogra and Spanck

Punjabi artistes you wish to collaborate with?

Sartek
: Jass Manak is my current favorite. I would also love to work with Bohemia and Juggy D.
