Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, the bonafide story-tellers of B-town have teamed up to bring a tale of rags to riches straight from the bylanes of Dharavi that’s unconventional and unapologetic. And boy, how worthwhile has this wait proven to be, especially after the ‘Asli Hip-Hop’ track that was dropped just less than a week ago.
Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby Productions present ‘Gully Boy’, a story of hope and aspirations in the face of adversity told through the eyes of a street-rapper essayed by Ranveer Singh. Ranveer’s character has a penchant for verses and wants to pursue his passion. But societal pressures and domestic abuse at home stands in his way. His only support is his lover essayed by Alia, who is gentle and bad-ass in equal measure. The film also features a stellar supporting cast including Kalki Koechlin, Amruta Subhash, Vijay Raaz, Vijay Maurya, Vijay Verma and Siddhant Chaturvedi. The film also features prominent rappers from the Mumbai indie scene namely, Emiway, Dee MC, MC Tod Fod, MC Minta and Kaam Bhari, to name a few.
The idea of ‘Gully Boy’ has been drawn from the lives of celebrated Indian hip-hop artistes Divine and Naezy. Pop culture celebrates their popularity but little is known about their journey. It will be a treat for the fans of Indian hip-hop to see what the film has to offer. That the teaming up of Ranveer and Alia brings more credibility to the subject will only be a matter of time. Alia, who has always been commended for her versatile roles is all set to entertain us in a newer avatar. As for Ranveer, the bundle of energy is simply unstoppable. Post the back-to-back success of ‘Padmaavat’ and ‘Simmba’, the actor is all set to sink his teeth into a space unexplored till date.
Directed by Zoya Akhtar, the film releases in cinemas on February 14th, 2018
