Masaba Masaba Web Review: Neena Gupta and daughter Masaba are sparkling in this innovative, satirical Netflix show

Vijayalakshmi Narayanan

Director : Sonam Nair

Genre : Dramedy

Our rating :

'Masaba Masaba', the latest Netflix web series is not high-on-content to its credit, but it's a light, instantly bingeable show starring the legendary Neena Gupta and her fashion-designer daughter Masaba.

Inspired from their own lives, both ladies play themselves as they navigate the path of self-discovery and finding purpose, even as life hurls a few lemons, their way.

Directed by Sonam Nair, who last directed 'Gippi' for Dharma Productions, 'Masaba Masaba' isn't a frothy affair, a syndrome which most light-hearted dramadies suffer from. It's easy and unpretentious. Written by Nair, Nandini Gupta, Anupama Ramachandran and Punya Arora (all-woman crew ), the show does not shy away from uncovering the ugly truths that lay beneath our protagonists. Beyond the glitzy smiles and fashionable appearances covered by the paparazzi of the duo are two women who share a complex and volatile dynamic with each other. While Neena is still hurting from a pain that has lived with her forever, Masaba too realises that she is a work in progress and eventually comes off age, as the show progresses. Even in the seemingly fanciful and upscale South Bombay locales (ably shot by Aditya Kapur with production design by Anasuya Sengupta), the themes explored by the show will resonate with its audience across the board.

That's largely to the performances by both leading ladies. It's hard to take your eyes off Neenaji, everytime she comes on-screen. Her resolve of wanting to reclaim her passion and ambition for films, in an industry that largely ignores actresses above a certain age, is commendable. You feel a sense of victory when she finally lands the lead role in 'Badhaai Ho', a movie that drew her the applause and accolades. Masaba matches upto her mother by just playing herself, without the slightest trace of theatrics. She is assured and solid. Key players also include a fantastic Neil Bhoopalam as Masaba's investor Dhairya Rana, Rytasha Rathore as best friend Gia, Nayan Shukla as Masaba's assistant Gehna and Pooja Bedi as Geeta Chopra, the therapist.

At less than three hours, 'Masaba Masaba' is watchful and a harmless dramedy.
