Where is the National Award winning Madhur Bhandarkar we knew?

- Team RadioCity

Firstly, for the uninitiated, let us tell you that Madhur Bhandarkar is the National Award-winning director who has delivered absolute masterpieces, namely, 'Chandni Bar', 'Page 3', 'Traffic Signal' and 'Fashion'. Rather, we should rephrase the above line in the past tense.Because more people are likely to remember him for also having helmed 'Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji', 'Heroine' and the latest to complete the trilogy of headache-inducing films, 'Calendar Girls'.Why do we say so? Because the last three films have alarmingly caused a dent on his rather impressive filmography. And why not?Okay, we admire how he likes to maintain a certain pattern of narrative, Sleaze, controversy, shock and direct references from real life scenarios form crucial ingredients in his films. Taken. But, don't you need to weave a credible story around the recurring themes of your films? More importantly, don't you think your films require a brilliant cast as well?Let's take a look at his last three films. 'Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji' was yawn-inducing from the start to the finish. For someone who has drawn the best work from Konkona Sen Sharma, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut, Madhur chose three absolutely expressionless female leads opposite commendable actors like Ajay Devgn and Omi Vaidya. Sorry Emraan, we aren't counting you in here.Bhandarkar followed it up with 'Heroine', a tacky affair that had us feeling sorry for Kareena Kapoor Khan and happy for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was the initial leading lady before motherhood came calling. Kareena sunk her teeth into the part but was sadly not backed by a competitive cast of supporting actors nor by an engaging screenplay.Lastly, 'Calendar Girls' was probably the ultimate nail in the coffin. Honestly, the movie was an unintentional comedy, thanks to its star cast and shady dialogues. The entire movie looked like a B-grade potboiler whose only intention was to titillate the sleaze birds in the audience with five good-looking faces. Not that we mean to rub it in, but having been fans of his in-your-face cinema, we surely are justified of keeping our expectations, sky-high.We only hope that Bhandarkar pays heed to our concern and soon. It's high time that the three-time National Award winning director doled out another masterpiece.
