Anurag Kashyap calls Bollywood toxic
One of the most versatile filmmakers, Anurag Kashyap impressed the audience with his acting skills in movies like Maharaja. But now, he has called the film industry `toxic` and confirmed that he is leaving Mumbai to avoid all the showbiz.
A while ago, Bollywood was going through a cancel culture, which influenced a major downfall of big banner movies` box office collections. This was before Shah Rukh Khan`s Pathaan saved the sinking ship.
During this turbulent phase, Kashyap explained the reason behind big-budget movie failures and also blamed producer Aditya Chopra for the same reasons.
Anurag Kashyap on big-budget movie failures
In an old interview, he said, “The industry is such that people will continue walking in from all walks of life. Here, cinema is largely controlled by those people, and that is the second generation, who has grown up in trial rooms. They have not lived life. So, they’re referencing it based on cinema."

"What is not on screen can’t be cinema to them. The biggest problem with YRF is the trial room effect. You take a story, and you want to make a Pirates of the Caribbean out of it, and it becomes Thugs of Hindostan. You take a story, and you want to make a Mad Max: Fury Road out of it, and it becomes Shamshera. The moment you head in that direction, you’re cheating yourself, especially in today’s time. A Shamshera would’ve worked two or three years back,” he further added.

Anurag Kashyap also talked about Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Film Studios and their back-to-back flop movies like Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Thugs of Hindustan, Samrat Prithviraj, and Shamshera.

He even said that in Jayeshbhai Jordar, the Gujarat that the movie portrayed doesn`t seem like Gujarat at all.
Further, he stated the main reason for YRF giving back-to-back failure is that, according to him, Aditya dictates the team, whereas he should empower them.
He said, “You have one person sitting in a cave, who doesn’t know the world outside, dictating how everybody should be making their films and telling them what to do. You’re digging your own grave. You have to empower people; you can’t dictate terms. That time has passed now. If Aditya Chopra has hired a bunch of people, he needs to empower them and not dictate to them, not control the casting, and not control everything. Sit in your office, hire good people if you trust them, and let them make their film. Which is the mistake he makes. He doesn’t let them be.”
Furthermore, he said that another reason for the failure of big-budget movies is that people who speak English are making movies in Hindi.
He said nowadays filmmakers are trying to copy Marvel, which results in losing themselves. The filmmaker also praised Karan Johar for breaking out of the trap and empowering the team to make films their way.
On the work front, Anurag Kashyap will next be seen in Dacoit, where he plays the role of a cop. The bilingual film shot in Hindi and Telugu stars Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur. in leading roles.
