Veteran singer Suman Kalyanpur dies at 89
Veteran playback singer Suman Kalyanpur, one of the most cherished voices of Hindi cinema’s golden era, passed away at the age of 89 on Sunday, May 31, at her residence in Mumbai.
The singer had reportedly been unwell for over a month and breathed her last at her Lokhandwala home. Her last rites are scheduled to take place in Mumbai’s Santacruz on Monday.
Known for her melodious voice and effortless versatility, Kalyanpur carved a unique space in Indian music despite often being compared to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Over the years, she became synonymous with some of Bollywood’s most memorable songs, including Na Na Karte Pyar, Na Tum Humein Jaano, Ajhun Na Aaye Baalma, and Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche.
Her soft, clear, and expressive singing style won the hearts of generations of music lovers.
Author Mangala Khadilkar, who penned Kalyanpur’s Marathi biography, confirmed the news and remembered the singer fondly.
“It happened around 8 pm. I am going to remember what a gentle person Suman Tai was. As for her voice, its sweetness was so different, soft and gentle and touched your heart instantly,” she told The Indian Express.
Born as Suman Hemmadi in 1937, she began her musical journey in the 1950s and went on to record songs in several Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, and Punjabi.
Her remarkable ability to deliver emotional depth through simple yet powerful renditions made her a beloved figure in the Indian music industry.
During the 1960s and 1970s, she worked with some of the biggest composers and filmmakers of the era, contributing significantly to what is often regarded as the golden age of Hindi film music.
Her songs continue to resonate with audiences decades later, standing as a testament to her enduring artistry.
With Suman Kalyanpur’s passing, Indian cinema has lost one of its most graceful and influential voices. Her musical legacy, however, will continue to live on through the timeless melodies that remain etched in the hearts of millions.
