Malayalam filmmaker Ravikumar Menon passes away
The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Ravikumar Menon, who passed away on April 4, 2025, at the age of 71 in Chennai. After a courageous battle with cancer, he breathed his last at Prashanth Hospital in Velachery. His son confirmed the news, noting that Menon had been undergoing treatment there.
Born in Thrissur, Kerala, Ravikumar was destined for the silver screen, being the son of renowned film producer KMK Menon and celebrated actress Bharathi Menon.
His cinematic journey began with the 1968 Malayalam film "Lakshaprabhu", marking the start of an illustrious career that would span over five decades. In 1975, he took on a leading role in "Ullasa Yaathra", further establishing his presence in the Malayalam film industry.
Menon`s versatility shone brightly as he seamlessly transitioned into Tamil cinema. In 1977, he made a significant impact with his performance in K. Balachander’s "Avargal", sharing the screen with legends like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sujatha. This role not only showcased his acting prowess but also endeared him to Tamil audiences.
Throughout his expansive career, Ravikumar Menon demonstrated remarkable adaptability, portraying a diverse array of characters in both lead and supporting roles.
His collaborations with industry stalwarts such as Mohanlal and Mammootty further highlighted his dynamic range as an actor. Some of his notable films include "Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum", "Aarattu", "CBI 5: The Brain", and "Veetla Vishesham.
Beyond the big screen, Menon made significant contributions to television. He debuted on the small screen with Naga’s "Iyandhira Paravai" from the "Marmadesam" series on Raj TV in 1997. His collaboration with K. Balachander continued with "Jannal: Marabu Kavithaigal" for Sun TV, and he was recently seen in an extended cameo in Kalaignar TV’s "Kannedhirey Thondrinal".
The news of his passing has elicited an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues alike. Social media platforms are flooded with tributes, reminiscing about his memorable performances and the indelible mark he left on the industry.
His mortal remains have been taken to his residence in Valasaravakkam, Chennai, with final rites scheduled to take place over the weekend.
