Aap jaisa Koi actor Madhavan says married actors fail to romance on screen
India`s heartthrob R. Madhavan is currently soaking high on the success of his latest release, Aap Jaisa Koi, a romantic film co-starring Fatima Sana Shaikh. As the movie streams on Netflix, he explains that doing love stories is not everyone`s cup of tea, especially married actors.
The Dhurandhar star got candid in an interview with India Today and explained romance is one of the toughest emotions to portray. It is far more demanding than it appears.
R. Madhavan calls romance a tough genre
Madhavan said, “All the emotions are difficult, but in romance, there are many close-ups. The camera is so perceptive that it is able to get what you`re thinking at that time even more clearly than what you`re expressing.”
According to him, no amount of technical polish on your craft can cover fake, genuine feelings.

He further elaborated, “If you`re not genuinely in love, if you don`t have chemistry, if I don`t have respect for her, and in the shot if I`m thinking about my hair – no matter how experienced an actor I am... or mujhe set peg matlab pata chala ki ganda set hai, director ke saath ladai ho chuki hai – yeh sab cheezen naa aap action mein kar loge, kuch farak nahi padta. Aap dramatics mein kar loge, loud mein." But the love that you want on-screen – for romance – is very difficult to convince that on screen.” (If I find out the set is messy or I’ve already had a fight with the director – those things you can still manage in action scenes. It doesn’t matter much. Even in loud, dramatic scenes, you can pull it off.)"
The Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein actor, who changed the way romance was perceived with his infamous character Maddy, believes romantic scenes require some kind of emotional surrender.
“You literally have to be in love with everything around that set for you to feel at ease. It`s just that emotion just flows. Till the time that doesn`t happen, the world has become very cynical – they won`t feel your love. So eternally, completely surrendering to the scene is very important when you are doing romance," he explained.
R. Madhavan`s `married actors lack on-screen chemistry` theory
In the same chat, the Aap Jaisa Koi star pointed out a rather intriguing trend in the industry to further explain his point. According to him, once an actor is in love with some other person in their real life, romancing someone else on-screen seems like a task.
“It`s a little bit of a controversy, but if you see husband-and-wife stars, they`re never able to create the chemistry on screen. Not one. When you start dating each other, or when you`re in love with each other, or you`re already married, most of the chemistry doesn`t work on screen. When they`re separated or they`ve broken up, there are chances that might even work,” Madhavan added.
He continued, “Because you really have to desire the person. And you have to imagine that you`re really in love with the person. You want the person for who they are. Or else, it becomes a very false emotion, and it becomes technical. It becomes pixelated.”
Aap Jaisa Koi is now streaming on Netflix.
