The world of music lost an iconic star in pop sensation-turned-religious leader Junaid Jamshed, last evening.
Jamshed alongwith one of his two wives, was onboard a PIA flight to Islamabad, carrying 48 other passengers. The cause of the plane crash is believed to be an engine failure though speculations are rife about a conspiracy theory owing to the concerned carrier’s brand reputation.
Jamshed, 52, was a recording artist, television personality, fashion designer, occasional actor and singer-songwriter before turning into a religious evangelist.
He rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of his band, Vital Signs in 1987. The band released their first album by the same name which featured the hit single, ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ that has evolved to be the country’s leading anthem. It was also ranked third among the top 10 songs when BBC World held a worldwide poll on the most popular songs of all-time. The success of the album was instrumental in shaping Pakistan’s rock music scene.
Jamshed then went solo with his first album, ‘Junaid of Vital Signs’ in 1994 which was later renamed as ‘Tumhara Aur Mera Naam’ by the record producers. But it was his second album ‘Us Rah Par’ in 1999, which not only became a best-seller, it also fetched him his public acclaim. The album included chartbuster songs as ‘Us Rah Par’, ‘Na Tu Ayegi’, ‘Aankhon Ko Aankhon Ney’ and ‘O Sanama’, which were hugely popular not just in Pakistan, but also in India.
His third album, ‘The Best of Junaid Jamshed’ in 2000 featured mixes of his singles. But his fourth and last album in 2001, ‘Dil Ki Baat’ was highly successful and garnered a lot of rave reviews.
Besides his noted contribution to music and pop culture, Jamshed will also be remembered for being a charitable mind. Ever since he left the music scene, Jamshed was involved in charitable work towards the NGO, Muslim Charity, which remained till his untimely death.
He is survived by his first wife, three sons and a daughter.
