I Genuinely Thought Awarapan Was A Good Film: Mohit Suri
Mohit Suri is busy promoting his upcoming film, Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. The upcoming musical romantic saga marks Ahaan`s glorious Bollywood debut. The trailer of Saiyaara has already intrigued fans.
While fans cannot wait to see Suri`s magic on the big screen, they are also demanding a re-release of his 2007 film Awarapan. The romantic action drama starring Emraan Hashmi and Shriya Saran was a box office disaster. However, it went on to become a cult classic much later on.
In a recent interview, the director opened up about Awarapan`s box office failure, how its music became popular among cinephiles, and Mahesh Bhatt`s advice that kept him afloat in the movie business.
“It didn`t do well when it released, and I was really upset because I genuinely felt the film was good. So I felt like maybe my perspective was off,” he recalled.

“I remember my friend Tanuj Garg, a distributor at the time, calling me and saying the film had too much violence. But he and many others still love the music and songs of `Awarapan`," Suri further added.
Mohit Suri also recalled a personal anecdote – a conversation with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt that kept him motivated despite the serious box office failure.
He said, "At that time, when the film didn`t do well, Mr Bhatt called me over. He poured me a drink and told me how when he did `Saransh`, it was an average hit and didn’t make money either. He said, ‘Son, I’m telling you that you know your job. And, this film will never go away.’”
"The fact that they are making a sequel to a film today which at that time didn`t do well at the box office – I don`t know too many film directors who`ve had that opportunity," the Ek Villain director added.
On the work front, Mohit Suri is gearing up for his upcoming film Saiyaara. The movie stars Ahaan Panday (Ananya Panday`s cousin) and Aneet Padda in the lead. Both newcomers will be seen on the big screen for the first time.
Their chemistry is effortless, and the trailer looks promising. Fans are looking forward to seeing Ahaan`s glorious debut. Saiyaara releases on July 11 in cinemas near you.
