2) Tumbbad

Counted as one of the best Indian horror films, Tumbbad uses the genre troupes meticulously to blend in a story about greed. It is visceral, creepy, and thrilling like anything.

The film uses its atmosphere to create a sense of horror and anxiety. It doesn't primarily work with jump scares but rather with taking you into its menacing world. By the last minute, you would be left restless and hooked on its extravagance.

3) Phobia

Phobia is a brilliant example of how horror can be induced through the actor's performance. The film is more of a psychological thriller than a supernatural horror however, there are enough tense moments that are gut-wrenching. Radhika Apte is just disturbing as a young woman suffering from a strange phobia.

Directed by Pawan Kripalani, Phobia is the rare Indian horror that spooks you to the core.

4) Kaun

Written by Anurag Kashyap and directed by Ram Gopal Varma, Kaun has attained cult status among fans for more than 20 years since its release. Again, a film where the performances of the leads just take the horror several notches higher. Starring Urmila Matondkar, who springs anxiety through her eyes, Kaun will have you hooked with its suspense. It is the perfect treat for Halloween.

5) Bulbbul

Bulbbul, a recent film that beautifully explores themes of patriarchy with the use of classic Indian horror troupes, is a revelation. Written and directed by Anvita Dutt, the film garnered a lot of acclaim for its portrayal and revival of the horror genre with much-needed freshness.

If it is the gothic-supernatural world that you seek, Bulbbul will not disappoint you. Along the way, it will make you think about a whole lot of things, with your head sprawling with terror.
