Top Ten Films Featuring Indias Female Superstar Sridevi

Unfortunately, her last film, but what a film. Playing Devki Sabharwal, a righteous biology teacher who will stop at nothing to avenge the brutal rape of her estranged daughter, Sri delivered one of 2017's most notable performances. That she lost out the Best Actress award again to Vidya for 'Tumhari Sulu' is quite tragic, to say the least.

Her comeback film after fifteen years following marriage and motherhood. As the loving home-maker Shashi who's ridiculed by her husband and daughter for her inability to speak in English, Sri's resolve to overcome her hurdle marked another winning performance. Her grammatically incorrect but tear-jerking speech in the climax left us crying a river, much after we had walked out of the screens. She earned a Filmfare nomination but lost out to Vidya Balan for 'Kahaani'.

A thriller by Mahesh Bhatt, 'Gumraah' saw Sri opposite Sanjay Dutt. The film went on to become the 7th biggest grosser of 1993, though it was a fairly moderate hit at the box-office, earning Sri another Filmfare nomination for Best Actress.

Mukul S Anand's film once again had Sridevi in a double role - playing mom and daughter. Co-starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shilpa Shirodkar and Nagarjuna, the film was a super hit at the box office and bagged three Filmfare awards.

Many film critics and cinema fanatics would argue that 'Lamhe' by Yash Chopra was way ahead of its time. Another iconic double portrayal by Sridevi as mother Pallavi and daughter Pooja, 'Lamhe' was one of the boldest love stories to have been told which traced the relationship of Anil Kapoor's character Viren with both mother and daughter. Even though it bombed at the box-office, it still fetched Sridevi, her second Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a Hindi feature film.

As twins Anju and Manju, Sri was a power-packed entertainer. She once again proved her effortless comic timing, especially as Manju, who grows up in a slum as a happy-go-lucky stage dancer. Her comical dance in an ill-fitting raincoat with umbrella in 'Naa Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai' remains one of her best dance numbers. She won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a Hindi feature film with this role.

As a young woman who falls for a selfish man, Sri immortalized romance in Yash Chopra's 'Chandni' opposite Rishi Kapoor. Some of their romantic songs together including, 'Tere Mere Hothon Pe' and 'Chandni O Mere Chandni' have grown to become cult hits. The song, 'Mere Haathon Mein' is a staple addition to the wedding playlist of every Indian household.

With 'Mr. India', Sridevi flexed her acting muscles a little and had the audiences indulging in her comic timing. The scene in which she dresses up as Charlie Chaplin is a reference point for our leading heroines if they have to attempt comedy. Even the scene where she and the kids indulge in a parody song over football is laugh-out-loud hilarious. At the same, she also showed us how to play the seduction game in the song, 'I Love You' wearing a peacock blue saree.

If her eyes conveyed innocence in 'Sadma', she was teething with vengeance in 'Nagina'. As the grief stricken widow who avenges her husband's death at the hands of an evil saint by turning into a shape-shifting snake, Sri was an absolute treat to watch as she matched the late Amrish Puri's wits in every scene of the film.

Directed by Balu Mahendra, 'Sadma' is the Hindi version of the filmmaker's original film in Tamil, titled, 'Moondrum Pirai'. Starring Sridevi and Kamal Haasan, 'Sadma' was a melancholic tale of tragedy and friendship. As a young woman who suffers from amnesia and regresses to her childhood self, Sri conveyed the innocence and naivety through her expressive eyes. Not to forget the evergreen music composed by Ilaiyaraaja that possessed of gems such as 'Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le' and 'Surmai Ankhiyon Mein'. The film landed Sri, a nomination for the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

She began her career as a child artiste in the Tamil movie 'Thunaivan' as Lord Muruga. Little did time know that the young child prodigy would grow up to be the country's most leading Indian film heroine, to be ever seen. Padma Shri Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan aka Sridevi changed the perceptions of the ideal film heroine with her unconventional movie choices, impressive dancing moves and irreplaceable charm. Her filmography that runs across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages is a legacy to be cherished for generations to come.
