Dussehra also known as Vijayadashami is a Hindu festival celebrated on the 10th day of Navratri. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Here are important facts that you should know about the festival.

1. Dussehra is closely associated with agricultural operations. It also implies a shift in the season as it marks the onset of winter season.

2. Kharif crops such as cotton, rice and maize are harvested after Dussehra.

3. In North or Western India, Dussehra is celebrated in honour of Lord Rama. Ram Lila, a dramatic musical play is enacted depicting the Hindu epic Ramayana and large effigies of Ravana are burned down.

4. On the contrary, in Southern India it is called as 'Vijayadashmi'. Houses in Tamil Nadu host the famous doll shows called Golu.

5. Dussehra was first celebrated back in the 17th century and has been a tradition ever-since.

6. Dussehra is not only celebrated in India but also in countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and Malaysia.
