RIP Pankaj Udhas: Sonu Nigam To Shankar Mahadevan, Singers Mourn Ghazal Maestro`s Death

Legendary singer and ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas passed away today, on February 26, after battling a prolonged illness. He was 73 years old. His family took to social media and confirmed the sad news.

According to his team, Pankaj Udhas had not been well for the past few days and was admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital. The team issued an official statement and said, "Pankaj Sir was suffering from prolonged illness and wasn't keeping well for the last few days. He died this morning around 11 a.m. at Breach Candy Hospital."

The Chitthi Aayi Hai singer's daughter, Nayab Udhas, took to Instagram and issued an official statement of his passing away. She wrote, "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on February 26, 2024, due to a prolonged illness. Udhas family."

Bollywood singers mourn Pankaj Udhas' death

As soon as the news went viral, many celebrated singers like Sonu Nigam, Shankar Mahadevan, and more expressed their grief and shock. They took to Twitter and mourned the ghazal singer's death.

1. Sonu Nigam


Taking it to Instagram, the Kal Ho Naa Ho singer wrote, "One of the most important parts of my childhood is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti."

2. Shankar Mahadevan

In an interview with India Today, Shankar Mahadevan expressed his shock and said, "Oh my god, this is so shockingmdasha terrible loss to the music industry. I'm not able to reconcile this loss."

3. Anup Jalota

Bhajan singer and former Bigg Boss contestant Anup Jalota also shared his condolences with the Udhas family. Anupa Jalota tweeted, "Unke jane ka bahut dukh hai we met sometime back. His death has saddened me. We had met sometime back," the musician and vocalist told India Today.

He also shared his grief on X and wrote, "Shocking (sad face emoji) music legend and my friend #PankajUdhas passes away. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

4. Sona Mohapatra

The Ambarsariya singer also took to Twitter and expressed her disbelief. She complimented the late singer for being a thorough gentleman and recalled performing with him.

"Full of grace and a thorough gentleman, I met Pankaj Udhas Ji when he invited me to perform at his Khazana Ghazal Festival. While many of us know him as a singer and performer, he was also a composer par excellence, with super hits like Ek Taraf Uska Ghar and Chand Jaisa #OmShanti," Mohapatra wrote.

Pankaj Udhas was a renowned ghazal maestro and a veteran singer who was known for masterpieces like Chitthi Aayi Hai, Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera, and Na Kajre Ki Dhar, among others.
