Why the industry should thank its stars for Shoojit Sircar?

- Team RadioCity

When his 'Yahaan' released in 2005 and met a dismal fate, he felt that a career in Bollywood was not for him.Until, 'Vicky Donor' happened in 2012 and the world was introduced to the sheer genius named Shoojit Sircar.Who could've thought that a film on sperm donation could make you feel extremely happy and joyful in the end? But 'Vicky Donor' broke box office records for its realistic portrayal of a spoilt brat based in Delhi who turns into a responsible 39social servant39, in a way.If his strange obsession with bodily fluids was not enough, he came out with last year's much loved 'Piku'. 'Piku' explored the dysfunctional relationship between a frustrated daughter and her cantankerous father through their 'poop'ful conversations. His sensitive handling of the theme of shifting responsibilities had the audiences hailing him as the contemporary Hrishikesh Mukherjee. But not one to get typecasted, Sircar has also explored the thriller genre with 'Madras Caf' and now, 'Pink'. What's especially notable about his films are that they carry engaging second halves. Most films usually suffer from that curse. It39s also applause worthy that Sircar does not repeat himself in any of his films.Another unusual takeaway from his films is that he offers the most substantial roles for his women. Whether it's Dolly Ahluwalia in 'Vicky Donor', Nargis Fakhri in 'Madras Caf', Deepika Padukone in 'Piku' or Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang in 'Pink', each role offers a huge pie for the actresses to chew into. It39s equally commendable to see how he crafts special characters from miniscule roles. Like Budhan, the servant in 39Piku39 and Dhritiman Chatterjee who plays the empathic judge in 39Pink39.A special mention must be given to the fact that he did cast Andrea Tariang, an actual character who hails from the North East. Something, that is an alien concept for our Bollywood filmmakers. But we would like to tip our hat to Sircar for reintroducing us to the newer shades of Amitabh Bachchan, as an actor. With 39Piku39 and now with 39Pink39, the filmmaker has had the audiences craving for more from an actor who has been around for more than four decades.A few days ago, we heard a colleague quip, 'As long as Shoojit Sircar's brand of cinema lives, is there hope for good Indian cinema'.We echo the same.
